The Lithang Crisis

Inside:

The Chinese government is engaged in a crackdown on Tibetans living in the Lithang area of Kham, eastern Tibet. On January 26, 2003, despite intense international pressure, the Chinese government executed 28-year old Lobsang Dhondup. This was the first known execution of a Tibetan for political crimes in 20 years. On the same day, the court upheld the death sentence with 2-year suspension of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, an influential Buddhist leader. Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was moved to a secret location, prompting additional fears for his safety.

Since last spring the Chinese authorities have arrested at least 12 other Tibetans in connection with this case. Five of these men remain imprisoned, detained or are missing. The crackdown has intensified in the region, and arrests and mistreatment continue in connection with this case.

Together we can make a difference. We can stop the execution of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche. We can ensure that he and all detained in connection with him are released. We can force the Chinese government to conduct an official inquiry into Lobsang Dhondup's execution, and, ultimately, we can help free Tibet from Chinese rule.

This site is dedicated to the memory of Lobsang Dhondup and to the ongoing case of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, Tserang Dhondrup, Choetsom, Passang, Tashi Phuntsok, and Tabo. Here you will find information and updates on the cases, maps and photos, and tools for taking action.
